elluminate Agents: A New System of Collaborative Intelligence for Clinical Development
The clinical development world is changing faster than anyone predicted. A decade of progress now happens in a year, and nowhere is that more visible than in the rise of AI in clinical development.
At this year’s ENGAGE conference, we introduced elluminate agents within the elluminate Clinical Data Cloud®, a new system of intelligence purpose-built for the reality of regulated clinical development. These domain-encoded and study-aware systems of collaborative intelligence analyze, explain, and act in context, using governed clinical data and controlled workflows.
Why the life sciences industry needs purpose-built agentic intelligence
As studies and protocols become more complex, the industry is looking for solutions beyond the simple automation of the past decade. AI can help bridge the gap. But to be usable in clinical development, intelligence must be governed, contextual, explainable, and safe. That’s why we built elluminate agents.
elluminate agents: Domain-encoded and study-aware agents turn governed clinical data into decisions

It’s no surprise that generic AI assistants fall short in regulated industries. They do not understand clinical context, lack access to unified and governed data foundations, cannot accurately produce explainable and audit-ready insights, and are not safely integrated into validated workflows.
elluminate agents were designed to solve these problems directly. They’re different for four core reasons:
Domain-encoded
They are fluent in CDISC standards, regulatory frameworks (21 CFR Part 11, Annex 11, ICH E6 R3), study design, review plans, quality thresholds, and clinical workflows. This is a crucial requirement given the complexity of this space.
Collaborative Intelligence
They work together with humans, earning trust responsibly over time. They also work with each other, forming a connected agent mesh that spans the entire clinical data lifecycle.
Expert Tools
Each agent includes advanced, specialized, and industry-specific reasoning: mapping logic, anomaly detection, protocol interpretation, risk assessment, data validation, and contextual analysis far beyond what an LLM or generic agent can do alone.
Secure & Governed
Agents run inside the unified elluminate data foundation, with lineage, metadata, role-based access, controlled compute, and validated APIs. Their reasoning is transparent and auditable.
This combination is what makes elluminate agents unique from other solutions in the industry. They’re a new generation of collaborative intelligent agents purpose-built for clinical development.
A multi-agent architecture across the clinical data lifecycle

The elluminate platform has evolved from a data cloud to a comprehensive data intelligence platform with agents embedded across every product pillar.
- In Data Mapping, they support spec generation, mapping transformation, validation, and code checks.
- In Data Review, they drive explanation, anomaly review, and semi-automated coding.
- In RBQM, they draft risk statements, track KRIs, surface meaningful signals, and recommend mitigations.
- In Study Operations, they interpret protocols, configure studies, and analyze operational bottlenecks.
All of these agents collaborate through a shared AI layer that forms a mesh of specialized intelligence, creating a secure and trusted architecture that will shape how clinical development operates in the years ahead.
elluminate Explain
ENGAGE 2025 included a live demo of the elluminate Explain Agent, part of elluminate Data Central. The agent interprets any chart or listing in real time, summarizing findings, identifying anomalies, cross-referencing the protocol and review plan, surfacing related vital signs and AEs, and recommending next steps.
As one data management lead said:
This is what agentic intelligence looks like when it’s grounded in governed data, regulatory expectations, and workflow reality. And it’s just the beginning.
Learn about the agents in elluminate, and watch the Explain Agent demo to see how the agent analyzes, interprets, and recommends actions in a matter of seconds.
